B2 and Com hem make triple-play moves

27 Apr 2006

Swedish broadband provider Bredbandsbolaget (B2) has launched fibre-to-the home (FTTH) triple-play services offering high speed internet access, IPTV and IP telephony over an IP next-generation network supplied by Cisco, reports dmeurope.com. Meanwhile, Swedish cable TV operator Com hem has chosen French vendor Alcatel’s IP service routing solution for its IP/MPLS-based data backbone network, enabling it to deliver triple-play services, including hundreds of TV channels, video-on-demand, VoIP and data services to 38 cities.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Com hem launched digital TV in 1997 and added high speed internet access over its proprietary cable network in 1999. The addition of nationwide voice services in 2004 completed its triple-play portfolio. Its network is available to a third of Swedish households, half of whom are able to receive broadband, and it hopes to have 100% broadband coverage by 2007. It had 170,000 retail broadband customers at the end of September 2005. In December 2005 Swedish risk capital group EQT agreed to sell Com hem to the Carlyle Group and Providence Equity. Bredbandsbolaget was established in 1998 and has grown into Sweden’s largest alternative service provider offering broadband internet access, telephony, digital TV and value added services. At the end of September 2005 it had 350,000 retail broadband subscribers, behind market leader TeliaSonera Sweden with 633,000. In July 2005 Telenor of Norway acquired 100% of Bredbandsbolaget.
