True gears up for IPTV

25 Apr 2006

Thai telecoms group True Corp has taken a step closer to launching IPTV services for its broadband customers, after its subsidiary True Digital Entertainment deployed a turnkey IPTV system, QualiTVision, provided by Cascade, a unit of Hong Hong’s PCCW. True is aiming to attract 500,000 broadband subscribers by the end of the year.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, True Corp accounts for over three-quarters of the Thai broadband access market, with 350,000 subscribers at the end of March 2006, up from 300,322 at the end of 2005. In November 2005 it took over its sibling pay-TV operator United Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) by buying a 30.59% stake from MIH Holdings for THB6 billion (USD155 million), boosting its holding to 70.74%, before launching a public offer for the remaining shares. The move puts True in a strong position to spearhead the convergence of broadband and cable TV.
