Power shortages a headache for cellcos

11 Apr 2006

Local daily newspaper The Monitor is reporting that the country’s ongoing power shortages are having a knock on effect on cellcos, which are struggling to cover rising costs. According to the report, MTN, Uganda Telecom and Celtel are having to run generators at each of their base stations almost 24 hours a day, which has led to a massive jump in fuel bills and associated costs. All of the cellcos claim to be – at least for the time being – absorbing the costs without passing them on to customers, although all express doubt that this can continue to be the case for much longer.
