Sri Lankan cellco Mobitel hopes to double its subscriber base by the end of the year, as well as commence test runs for 3G next month. Mobitel – owned by dominant fixed line operator Sri Lanka Telecom – is on target to complete a USD150 million GSM network expansion this year that will see the number of base stations jump from 420 to 675, providing coverage of 90% of the island’s populated areas. ‘With the network in place, we want to double subscriber growth to a million customers during this financial year, from the 500,000 subscribers we have now,’ CEO Suren Amarasekera told reporters. Amarasekera said Mobitel made a LKR1.3 billion (USD12.3 million) loss on revenue of LKR3.6 billion for the year ended 2005, but declined to give future forecasts.
