Smart Communications has announced that its 3G network is now available nationwide, and hopes the improved coverage will give it a strategic advantage in the race to attract new users. In a statement Smart said it had ‘significantly extended the network reach of its 3G network to more cities and municipalities nationwide, further improving coverage in major urban centres as well as provincial areas.’ In the three months since it commenced deployment, Smart has rolled out coverage to 60 cities, including more than 20 outside of Metro Manila. Smart and its parent Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) see 3G as a core revenue driver in the coming years and now claims to be ‘the first and currently the only mobile operator in the Philippines’ to offer 3G, having launched the network on a free trial basis on 14 February this year. The launch came just two months after it received its licence from the NTC in December.
