Cytamobile-Vodafone, the wireless arm of Cyprus’ national telco Cyta, will launch the Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G/GPRS data card service on 3 April. The laptop data card provides users with wireless internet access at speeds of up to 384kbps over Cyta’s recently built W-CDMA network, and operates over GPRS where 3G coverage is not available. Cyta says the data service will have coverage of up to 70% of the island’s population and offers roaming in many EU countries. Cytamobile-Vodafone is yet to launch a commercial 3G service for handset users, whereas rival Scancom has provided nationwide 3G services under the Areeba brand since December 2004.
