Cheaper international calls

30 Mar 2006

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has removed restrictions on international gateways, enabling GSM operators with their own gateways to carry third party traffic. Until now, GSM operators with their own gateways have been restricted from carrying third party international traffic, including that of fixed wireless operators. International call rates are expected to fall as a result of the new ruling. They currently hover between NIG45 and NIG75 per minute. The NCC said the move was part of a wider liberalisation plan aimed at making phone services more affordable, improving operators’ freedom and extending services to rural and remote areas.
