True’s WE PCT to finally break even

23 Mar 2006

Thailand’s True Corp is expecting its limited mobility personal communication telephone (PCT) service to break even this year, after investment of more than THB15 billion (USD385 million) over seven years. WE PCT, provided by True’s subsidiary Asia Wireless Communication, was launched in 1999 and had 470,000 users at the end of 2005, down from a peak of 670,000 in 2001. The cordless technology has largely been superseded by cellular services, but still retains a niche customer base. Asia Wireless has shifted its focus to concentrate 70% of WE PCT marketing on the 10-18 youth market and expects its subscribers to grow by 7% this year. The company says PCT represents an economical and practical choice for children compared to mobile phones, due to lower calling rates.
