Optimus goes for HSDPA

22 Mar 2006

Portugal’s third mobile operator Optimus has contracted Ericsson of Sweden to upgrade its 3G networks with HSDPA technology. The deal also calls for Ericsson to supply an IP multimedia sub-system. The value of the contract was not disclosed. Optimus is part of the Sonaecom group which has made a hostile takeover for the country’s largest telco, Portugal Telecom. If successful, Optimus would be combined with PT’s own mobile division TMN, although Portugal’s other cellco, Vodafone, has this week called for regulators to block the deal, saying it would create an uneven playing field.
