NTT DoCoMo to buy Guam Cellular and Guam Wireless

20 Mar 2006

Japanese cellco NTT DoCoMo has announced plans to acquire 100% of two mobile companies serving Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands for a total payment of USD71.8 million. DoCoMo plans to establish a holding company to buy 100% of Guam Cellular & Paging, which will then acquire Guam Wireless Telephone Company, before merging the two companies. The Japanese cellco has pledged to provide around USD6.5 million in additional funds to strengthen the merged company’s infrastructure, and to introduce W-CDMA services in the future. The acquisitions are currently awaiting approval from US regulatory authorities, which oversee communications services in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Guam Cellular currently provides a CDMA service under the brands Guamcell Communications and Saipancell Communications, while Guam Wireless provides a GSM service under the HafaTEL brand.
