Telefónica moves towards ‘quadruple-play’

13 Mar 2006

Spanish telecoms giant Telefónica is looking to offer a fully integrated telecoms package in the Czech Republic consisting of fixed line and mobile services, broadband internet access and TV broadcasting – the so-called ‘quadruple-play’. To this end it has introduced new bolt-on offers to its existing dual-play and triple-play packages, allowing clients to call mobile numbers from their fixed line telephones at reduced rates. Industry watchers have interpreted the move as a signal that the Spanish firm, which controls incumbent Cesky Telecom, is planning to defend its fixed line business from the ever growing popularity of mobile telephony. Telefónica is also understood to be planning on introducing quadruple-play services in its home market and in Germany as part of the strategy.
