The PT Group has announced the acquisition of a 51% stake in a mobile operator in the Democratic Republic of Congo via a consortium made up of Portugal Telecom (60%) and Unitel (40%). The company, which has not been named, is reported to be in receipt of a GSM 900/1800 licence and is expected to begin commercial operations by mid-2006. In the first phase of development the company aims to establish a network with capacity of 500.000 with coverage of twenty cities, most of which will be connected via a satellite backbone. Fixed line operator OCPT owns a 39% stake in the cellco, with private Congolese investors holding the remaining 10%.
