Bangladesh mobile market grows by 180%, set to double this year

The number of mobile subscribers in Bangladesh reached 10.8 million at the end of January, up by 180% from 3.8 million at the end of 2004. Market leader GrameenPhone more than doubled its customer base to six million, and Aktel maintained its second position, increasing its number of subscribers to 2.6 million from 1.1 million at end-2004. Banglalink climbed from fourth to third place by raising its user total from 26,000 to 1.5 million in the 13-month period. Meanwhile, fourth ranked CityCell claimed around 500,000 subs at the end of January, up from 348,000 in December 2004, and current smallest player Teletalk managed to sign up 200,000 clients since launching services last March. A sixth competitor, Warid Telecom, is preparing to enter the wireless sector after winning an operating licence in December 2005. The country’s operators expect the total number of cellular subscribers to double to over 20 million by 2007.
