The losing firms in the recent auction of 3G mobile phone licences in the Philippines have each submitted appeals to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), asking it to reconsider their bids as they jostle for the country’s solitary unallocated licence. The filings from Bayantel, AZ Communications Network, Multimedia Telephony, Next Mobile and Pacific Wireless, each ask the regulator to reconsider their plans to offer 3G services. In the auction of 28 December 2005, the five firms failed to meet the minimum score of 20 points out of a possible 30, in the NTC’s grading system for UMTS applications. The successful bidders, Smart Communications, Globe Telecom, Digital Mobile Philippines and Connectivity Unlimited Resources Enterprises, were all awarded concessions
