Telefónica gets OK for O2

11 Jan 2006

The European Union (EU) has approved Telefónica’s acquisition of UK-based O2 Group. Telefónica agreed to buy O2 in October 2005 in a deal worth GBP17.7 billion (USD31.45 billion). The EU’s approval is conditional on Telefónica withdrawing from all of its international mobile operator alliances to stem fears that the merged company would distort international roaming charges.
