Thai operators looking for improved growth in 2006

10 Jan 2006

Thailand’s mobile operators are optimistic that the number of mobile phone users in the country will increase by over four million in 2006. Sigve Brekke, CEO of the country’s second largest cellco, Digital Total Access Communications (DTAC), said that the cellular market reported lower than expected growth in 2005 because operators focused on price competition instead of creating new, innovative services, resulting in increased customer migration between networks but comparatively low levels of new subscribers.

DTAC expects to gain between 1.2 million and 1.7 million new users in 2006. The company had a total of 8.8 million subscribers at the end of 2005, an increase of a million in the year and around double the customer base of third placed TA Orange. Market leader Advanced Info Services (AIS) expects to sign up an additional 1.3 million subscribers, bringing its total to 17.3 million in 2006.
