Ajayi wants Nitel to be split up

9 Jan 2006

Lanre Ajayi, president of the Nigeria Internet Group (NIG) and managing director of PiNet Informatics, has said that national carrier Nitel should be split up into several different companies to be sold separately, after the privatisation of the operator was called off last week. Nitel was due to be sold to Orascom Telecom of Egypt last week, but the process ground to a halt after its USD256.53 million offer was deemed too low. Ajayi claims that the telco would be more desirable to investors if it was split up.

In a separate story, mobile operator MTN Nigeria has launched the second phase of its Y-ello promotion, offering a NGN480 (USD3.75) starter pack with NGN200 worth of free airtime.
