Finnet ops go for WiMAX

5 Jan 2006

Two of the Finnet Group’s local operators are to deploy WiMAX wireless broadband networks to improve internet access in southeast Finland. Savonlinnan Puhelin and Mikkelin Puhelin have contracted Israeli equipment firm Alvarion to supply WiMAX networks in the Saimaa Lake District in Finland’s South Savo region which is a popular holiday destination. The telcos want to increase broadband coverage in South Savo from the current level of around 70% to 96%. Part of the funding for the project will come from the government and the European Union. Alvarion says it has now supplied ten WiMAX networks for Finnet Group operators.
