PTA allows telcos to continue operating in AJK

5 Dec 2005

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has said that all telcos can continue operating in the regions of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) until 13 April, extending an agreement which was initially due to expire on 13 December. The country’s operators were licenced to provide services in the disputed northern regions in October in a bid to provide better communications to those engaged in relief work following the earthquake that hit the country earlier that month. Under normal circumstances only state company the Special Communications Organisation (SCO) is allowed to operate in Kashmir. The PTA has hinted that it may bring a new licensing regime into play which will allow telcos to operate in AJK on a permanent basis, although this plan needs to be approved by the IT and telecom ministries in the region.
