Russian mobile group Vimpelcom has contracted Ericsson to upgrade the GSM network of its newly acquired cellco Ukrainian Radio Systems (URS) in a deal valued at USD200 million. Ericsson will supply radio and switching components, and will also install the infrastructure. The upgraded network will support GPRS and EDGE services. As part of the deal Vimpelcom has agreed to purchase an additional USD300 million worth of equipment from the Swedish vendor at a later date.
