NTC plans to licence new internet gateway operators

15 Nov 2005

Thai regulator the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) says it will push ahead with plans to licence new international internet gateway (IIG) operators to compete with monopoly provider CAT Telecom, after deciding that they would not interfere with current bandwidth allocations. The NTC had been consulting the National Broadband Commission (NBC) over concerns that the launch of new IIGs might affect current spectrum usage, but is now satisfied that this will not be the case. The NTC has yet to say how many IIG concessions it will distribute or reveal a timetable for allocation.
