Fitel looking to boost sales of dual technology PHS-GSM handsets

15 Nov 2005

Taiwan’s sole PHS mobile operator First International Telecom (Fitel) says it is looking to increase the proportion of dual technology PHS/GSM handsets it sells from 20% to 50% of total sales by year-end. The operator says it will launch two new dual mode handsets before Christmas and then at least two new phones during each quarter of 2006.

Fitel was established in April 1997 as an islandwide paging service provider and received permission to operate a personal handyphone service in February 2000. The company received its concession in April 2001, launching in the 1900MHz band a month later. It expects its customer base to reach 1.1 million by the end of this year and 1.4 million by the start of 2007, up from 770,000 in 2004.
