Ukrainian mobile operator Astelit has contracted Ericsson to expand and increase the capacity of its GSM network in a deal worth USD45 million. The expansion will cover Kyiv, Odessa, Nikolayev, Chernigov, Cherkassy, Khmelnitskiy, Vinnitsa, Zhitomir and linking roads. Ericsson will provide Astelit with a complete turnkey solution for its GSM/GPRS core and radio network, including switching, radio network and transmission equipment as well as professional services, implementation and training. Astelit offers services under the brand name life:) and currently has GSM coverage of 91 cities – 17 with EDGE technology – and 8,800 settlements; it plans to up its population coverage to 70%.
