Thai mobile round up: TA Orange ups coverage as AIS growth slows

27 Oct 2005

Thai mobile operator TA Orange has contracted French vendor Alcatel to upgrade its GSM/GPRS/EDGE infrastructure as part of its ongoing efforts to increase network coverage. In 2004 the cellco drew up plans for a THB6 billion network investment that will see 92% of the nation covered by the end of 2005; it has since upped the investment to THB10 billion, saying it will have an additional 1,200 base stations operational by 2006.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s largest cellco Advanced Info Services (AIS) saw its subscriber base pass the 16 million mark in the third quarter of 2005, but warns that growth is slowing. The operator ended September with 16.09 million users, of which 14.01 million were prepaid, but growth during the month was down 10.8% on August.
