Czech On Line has launched commercial ADSL2+ networks in Mlada Boleslav, Kladno and Pribram, capable of offering high speed internet access at speeds of up to 24Mbps. The operator, which markets its services under the brand name Volny, is pitching its new product against incumbent Cesky Telecom’s fastest service (2Mbps) and cable modem alternatives offered by the country’s cable operators which have a maximum downstream speed of 6Mbps. However, in the first instance it is capping the maximum speed of the new networks to 2Mbps and pricing the service from CZK1,189/month. Czech Online has been active in the Czech Republic for more than a decade. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Telekom Austria and reported sales of CZK650 million in 2004. The company’s product and marketing director Robert Fridrich says Czech Online plans to expand the service to 60% of phone lines over the next year. It is providing ADSL2+ access through lines leased from Cesky Telecom.
