ComReg to auction high speed wireless data licences

21 Oct 2005

Irish regulator ComReg has launched an auction for three ten-year national licences for the provision of Wideband Digital Mobile Data Services (WDMDS) in the 420MHz and 900MHz bands. The new licences will facilitate the provision of high speed wireless internet access and other data communications services. A reserve price of EUR100,000 has been placed on each concession and there is a EUR20,000 fee ‘to cover the cost of conducting the licensing process’; applicants must also provide a EUR25,000 deposit. The closing date for applications is 29 November and the winners will be announced on 16 December. ComReg is not placing any conditions or restrictions on the type of technology used to provide services with the frequency. The regulator believes the additional spectrum will enhance the provision of new high speed mobile data services and complement existing broadband and wireless services. ComReg has previously licensed the 3.5GHz, 10.5GHz and 26GHz bands for fixed wireless access (FWA) services.
