AR Telecom to deploy wireless broadband network

23 Sep 2005

João Pereira Coutinho’s SGC Group will invest EUR800 million over the next five years in its Portuguese start-up AR Telecom, in order to help the unit roll out a new wireless broadband network, writes Telecompaper. The funding for the new telco will be raised from SGC’s own resources as well as through international capital, and will allow AR Telecom to deploy its own network infrastructure and offer direct connection services based on Tmax wireless digital fixed networks developed by SGC Telecom. According to AR Telecom’s president Miguel Martins, the service currently covers around 30,000 households in Lisbon and the company’s aim is to boost this to the whole of the capital by March 2006 and Porto soon after. It hopes to capture a 20% market share in its service areas in two years time.
