NTC recalls Thai Mobile’s 3G spectrum; TOT not best pleased

20 Sep 2005

Thailand’s National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has angered state-owned fixed line incumbent TOT by ordering the recall of 3G spectrum held by its wireless subsidiary Thai Mobile. The cellco has garnered just 100,000 subscribers and a 0.6% market share in three years of operation, but TOT claims that it plans to invest heavily in its wireless subsidiary to increase its subscriber base, and that the launch of 3G services is the foundation of its customer acquisition strategy. TOT only recently bought its former joint venture partner CAT Telecom out of Thai Mobile, and views the mobile operator as a means of counteracting falling revenues in the fixed line market where it will soon be faced with increased competition.
