BTC selects Tyco for undersea fibre-optic network

15 Sep 2005

Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) has awarded Tyco Telecommunications a multi-million dollar turnkey contract to build the Bahamas Domestic Submarine Network (BDSNi) portion of its self healing fibre-optic ring, linking the islands of Andros, New Providence, Eleuthera, Exuma, Long Island, Ragged Island, Inagua, Mayaguana, Crooked Island, Rum Cay, San Salvador, Cat Island, Abaco, and Grand Bahama. Under the contract, Tyco will design, deliver, install, commission and test the new high capacity, repeaterless submarine network which, on completion, will span 2,800km and carry up to 1.92 terabit per second of transmission capacity. The western half of the ring is due to be lit at the end of 2005, and the eastern half is expected to be ready for service by mid-2006.
