BTC disconnects small firms

22 Aug 2005

Bulgaria’s former monopoly telco BTC has stopped a number of smaller operators from providing cheap calls over its ISDN lines, it emerged on Saturday. More than 60 local firms have recently been disconnected from the telco’s network, according to the Bulgarian media. BTC says that the alternative companies have no right to use its ISDN network unless they hold a fixed line operator’s licence. The company claims it has been suffering monthly losses of around EUR250,000 because of the telcos’ using its network in a way it considers illegal. Recent surveys have found that alternatives have a market share of only around 4%.
