Government-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is ramping up its Wi-Fi network expansion programme, and aims to have rolled out 300 Wi-Fi hotspots in 24 cities by the end of August. Its latest project is to extend Wi-Fi services to Chandigarh and several other cities in the Punjab region. It is also engaged in setting up and testing ten WiMAX base stations. India now has around 500 public hotspots, 70% of them in Bangalore, and analysts expect numbers to reach 1,500 by 2006.
