T-Mobile beating Eurotel in mobile subscriber race

15 Aug 2005

T-Mobile Czech ended June with 4.46 million subscribers to become the country’s largest mobile operator based on SIM cards activated, ahead of Eurotel Prague which registered 4.42 million at the same date. Eurotel has, however, altered its accounting methodology which cut 240,000 from the total compared with the end of March. Both companies now only count pre-paid SIM cards that have been recharged during the last 13 months. Meanwhile, the country’s third wireless operator Oskar-Vodafone had 1.951 million SIM cards at the end of June, according to its own definition of ‘active’ subscribers, namely only those clients who have recharged in the last six months. Critics of the new accounting methodology are quick to point out that a comparison based on active SIM cards is misleading. There are around eleven million SIM cards in operation in a country with a little over 10.2 million people. While maybe 20% of the population has no mobile phone at all, others have more than one phone and use the second one for things other than voice service.
