Vodafone has launched a 3G network in New Zealand, bringing it into competition with Telecom Mobile, which introduced its own high speed cellular service towards the end of last year. Telecom’s CDMA2000-based 3G system has seen it winning market share from Vodafone but the UK-based firm is aiming to recapture some of the ground it has lost by investing “hundreds of millions of dollars” in its 3G rollout. Services are initially available only in Auckland but Vodafone says it intends to build networks in 19 cities. Vodafone had 1.89 million customers in New Zealand at the end of June while Telecom Mobile claimed just over 1.6 million.
