DoCoMo buys into AIS subsidiary

8 Aug 2005

Japanese cellco NTT DoCoMo has entered into an agreement with Thailand mobile operator Advanced Info Service Public Co (AIS) to purchase a 30% stake in the latter’s Advanced Mpay Co subsidiary. Advanced Mpay operates an electronic card payment system via mobile phones in Thailand. DoCoMo hopes the agreement will expand its presence in the country.

In a separate story, DoCoMo has revealed that it is looking for more overseas handset suppliers for its 3G FOMA service. Japanese companies Fujitsu, Matsushita, Mitsubishi, NEC and Sharp currently supply FOMA handsets to the operator, with US-based Mototrola having also started providing models in July. DoCoMo is currently negotiating with Nokia as a potential supplier.
