Unfair interconnection a cause for GT grief

4 Aug 2005

According to Mobile Africa, Ghana’s national fixed line operator Ghana Telecom (GT) is paying GHC10 billion (USD1.12 million) a week to the country’s leading cellular operator, Spacefon Areeba, leading to an increasing financial strain on GT’s already under-resourced coffers. The huge payouts are said to be the by-product of Ghana’s ‘unfair’ interconnect agreements. Spacefon Areeba has around 1.2 million users compared with the incumbent’s paltry 312,000 main lines in service, and available statistics show that for every eleven calls made from GT’s PSTN to Spacefon, only one is made from the cellco’s network to GT.
