Digicel celebrates fourth anniversary

29 Jul 2005

Caribbean mobile operator Digicel, which first opened for business in April 2001, says it has now signed up more than 1.3 million users in Jamaica and a further 1.7 million in its other regional businesses, giving it an average market share of 60% across the region. The company recently assumed a debt burden of USD700 million to expand its Caribbean footprint and has acquired Cingular Wireless’s operations in the region, giving it a presence in 15 countries. It has also gained entry into the lucrative Trinidad & Tobago market, paying USD16 million for a licence, and has set itself the challenge of entering the Haitian mobile market where telephone penetration stands at less than 5%.
