Sudan has second cellco

27 Jul 2005

Lebanese investment firm Investcom Holding has announced that it has launched its latest telecoms operations with the switch-on of services in Sudan. Investcom’s 55%-held subsidiary in Sudan, Bashair Telecom, which is operating under the name Areeba, won its combined GSM-900/1800 and W-CDMA 3G concession in October 2004 with a bid of EUR150 million to become the country’s second cellular operator. The market is currently served by the state-backed firm Mobitel which claims around one million clients. Areeba’s network will initially provide coverage only in the capital Khartoum, but coverage will gradually be expanded over the next three years. High speed data services are due to be launched towards the end of the year.
