BTC fined for abusing dominant position

5 Jul 2005

Bulgaria’s anti-trust commission has fined former state-run telco Bulgarian Telecommunications Company (BTC) BGL100,000 (USD61,000) for anti-competitive behaviour in the internet sector. BTC, bought last year by Vienna-registered Viva Ventures, was found to have made it difficult for local ISPs to compete on an equal playing field and has been ordered to provide rival operators with bit stream access to its lines, to be charged at non-discriminative rates. The original complaint against BTC was filed by privately-owned ISP Internet Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Internet Association. BTC owns the vast majority of Bulgaria’s wireline infrastructure.
