Oskar gets a Vodafone makeover

4 Jul 2005

Following its takeover by Vodafone last month, Czech mobile operator Oskar Mobil is changing its smiling red square logo to include the Vodafone logo as part of a long term plan to re-brand the company. The cellco says it plans to use the joint Oskar/Vodafone branding for a year, before dropping the Oskar name entirely. Vodafone bought Oskar Mobil and Romanian operator Mobifon from TIW of Canada for USD3.5 billion last month.

Oskar had 1.89 million subscribers at the end of March this year and a market share of 17.2%. In recent months it has ramped up its efforts to deploy EDGE technology, rolling out coverage to 20% of the country since launching the service in March. The cellco has also tweaked its portfolio of products to encourage take-up of EDGE, and elsewhere it has introduced a ‘free-hour’ promotion to stimulate demand among the general public.
