Citizen’s group calls for protest against mobile phone tax

27 Jun 2005

Bangladeshi consumer group Citizen’s Rights Movement has called for mobile phone users to switch off their handsets for three hours on 28 June to protest against a tax on new mobile phone subscriptions. Operators in the country have also been demanding the withdrawal of the new USD20 tax, arguing that it will slow growth in the sector. The finance ministry replied by suggesting that cellcos cut their charges if they are worried about high costs putting off new users.
