Troops seize PTCL to stop strikes

13 Jun 2005

The Pakistani government yesterday sent in security forces to seize control of the national telco Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL) after workers and trade union leaders called a second strike against the company’s privatisation next week. The strike was initiated following an announcement made by the government on Saturday that bids would be invited to invest in a 26% stake in the telco on 18 June. Union leaders threatened to paralyse telecoms services in the country if the government decision is not withdrawn by Wednesday 15 June. The privatisation process has already been postponed once, to end a ten-day standoff with 55,000 PTCL workers, and the government says it will not be moved again.
