New tax results in banning of ILD carriers

7 Jun 2005

The Jamaican government has forbidden local operators from terminating calls from several international carriers until they comply with a new tax which came into effect on 1 June. The tax stands at USD0.02 per minute for calls to mobile phones and USD0.03 per minute to landlines; it will remain in force for three years, by which time the government hopes to generate JMD1 billion (USD216 million).
