NCC to open up fixed wireless access

31 May 2005

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced plans to allow the country’s fixed wireless access (FWA) operators to compete directly with mobile operators under a unified licence scheme. Until now FWAs have been limited to providing coverage of specific geographic areas, but the new plan – which is scheduled to be introduced in February 2006 – will enable them to offer countrywide roaming services. The mobile operators have argued that the new legislation could discourage investment in a sector that is already under-funded and may further weaken the industry, although the NCC says that is will increase the take-up of mobile services.
