26 May 2005

According to a report from BNAmericas, 45% of Peruvian wireless customers use their handsets exclusively to receive calls, thanks to high interconnection charges. Telecoms regulator Osiptel currently has the charge set at USD0.205 per minute, well above the regional average of USD0.135. It is however, reported to considering setting a new lower rate from June. At the end of March 2005 there were 4.36 million wireless customers in Peru, representing a penetration of 15.9%. Telefonica takes a 50.4% share of the total in its own right, although with its recently acquired BellSouth subsidiary Communications Moviles its share rises by a further 16%. Telecom Italia takes a 29.1% of customers and Nextel 4.5%.
