Telekom Austria has Mobtel in its sights

17 May 2005

Telekom Austria’s bid to purchase a stake in Serbian cellco Mobtel has received the support of the Serb government, according to the Austrian Vice Chancellor and Minister for Infrastructure, Hubert Gorbach. The minister confirmed the news yesterday following his meeting with his Serbian counterpart Velimir Ilic. However, the Serb Minister of Finance has poured cold water on the deal saying that while the government wants to sell its share in Mobtel, there is no need to force an unnecessarily speedy conclusion. Bogolijub Karic, the co-owner of Mobtel, has signed an agreement to sell his 51% interest in the cellco to a consortium of Austrian investors, thus resolving a previous deadlock regarding the ownership of Mobtel.
