Warid Telecom launches services

16 May 2005

UAE-based Warid Telecom has launched its mobile service in Pakistan, signing a strategic partnership with Nokia for the supply of handsets. The cellco won its GSM licence in April 2004 after South Korea’s Space Telecom, which had initially been awarded the licence, failed to pay the first instalment of the licence fee. It said it will invest around USD1 billion into the rollout of its GSM network over the next three years.

In a separate story, the eight telcos shortlisted to take a controlling stake in fixed line operator Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) are expected to begin the bidding process on 10 June this year.
