Vodafone contracts Siemens/Nokia for 3G deal

5 May 2005

Vodafone Hungary has signed deals with Siemens and Nokia to supply and build a complete W-CDMA 3G core network. Under the terms of the deals, whose values have not been disclosed, Nokia will provide its 3GPP Release 4 based MSC Server System, including the Nokia MSC Server and Nokia Multimedia Gateway, while Siemens will deliver and install W-CDMA radio equipment. Vodafone hopes that the contracts will enable it to bring cost effective 3G services to its customers.

In a separate story, Hungarian incumbent Matáv is set to officially change its name to Magyar Telekom within the next few days. Its subsidiaries will also be rebranded; Matáv Wireline Services will become T-Com, Axelero will be T-Online, Matáv Business Services will become T-Systems and MatávkabelTV will take on the T-Kábel brand. Its mobile arm has already adopted the T-Mobile banner. The telco first announced plans to change its name in January this year.
