Minister slams ‘excessive’ mobile charges

12 Apr 2005

Fiji’s Communications Minister Dr Ahmed Ali has slammed the excessive charges being levied on the country’s mobile users and says that the government is working hard to change the situation. Dr Ali blames the exorbitant costs on the existing monopolistic environment, but says that the ‘government is obliged to enable opportunities for those willing to invest resources to provide a service which its people are demanding at a competitive price’. The minister’s statement comes as he ponders a decision to grant 3G operating licences to Vanua Development Corp and Pacific Connex. The two companies have until the end of June to submit applications and a suitable business plan to launch services.
