MTC to limit Telefonica to single band of spectrum

6 Apr 2005

According to BNamericas.com, Peru’s Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) has approved a decree establishing that no mobile operator may own both A and B band licences in the 800MHz frequency band, a situation that currently applies to Telefónica Móviles. The ruling puts pay to Telefonica’s plans to merge Telefonica Moviles Peru and Comunicaciones Moviles (formerly BellSouth Peru), and transfer the latter’s B band spectrum to the other unit. The decree also establishes the maximum spectrum allocation per operator for PCS, trunking and mobile services as 60MHz. Also, no operator can own more than 25MHz in the 800MHz band.
