Ukraine’s IP revolution

24 Mar 2005

Ukraine’s national PTO Ukrtelecom plans to deliver domestic VoIP and IP-based multimedia services to its nine million fixed line subscribers through the installation of an advanced IP/MPLS core network, built by Cisco Systems. The telco spent USD350 million in 2004 on the network upgrade programme and envisages a similar investment this year. Cisco has also been selected as sole supplier of metro Ethernet infrastructure, IP gateways, softswitches and W-LAN equipment. Ukrtelecom is also using ECI Telecom to provide DWDM systems for its national optical fibre network, and Slovenian access vendor Iskratel for 1,000 IP DSLAMS to support the telco’s nationwide launch of ADSL2+ services.
